Grades 6-8, Science
Students will take on the role of the school nurse to demonstrate an understanding of body systems. This assessment provides students with five “patient” profiles that have a brief list of symptoms.

Grades 3-5, ELA, Music
Over the course of 3-4 class periods, students will show their knowledge of fractions as they take on the role of music composer. They will show how unit fractional notes make up a whole and generate equivalent fractions for a 4/4 beat.

Grades 6-8, ELA
Students will be asked to submit a pitch to a film production company in which they share why their memoir should be turned into a film. Students will take the memoirs they have written during a larger unit and develop a summary that emphasizes the plot, the major arc of their story, along with the major characters in their memoir. Additionally, students will be asked to do an analysis of the tone and mood of their own text to create a soundtrack.
Grades 6-8, Science
Students will take on the role of environmental activist-educators who strive to educate elementary school students about environmental restoration in the wake of natural and human-caused disturbances to ecosystems.

Students will combine their knowledge of birds and adaptations with their imagination to create new a new bird that has adaptive features. Students will start by thinking of a home for the bird and imagine a bird that can survive in the home that the student creates.

Students will choose a leader or activist that resonates with them and conduct research on this figure’s life experiences, challenges, and accomplishments. Using this research, students will write an essay explaining how this activist/leader embodies the values and leadership qualities the student finds to be in important in change agents or positive figures.

Grades 9-12, Science
Students will take on the role of artists submitting a piece of work and an artist statement that tells the story of life (grounded in concepts of evolution) for a contest for a natural history exhibition. In their art (or artist statement), students will show their knowledge of the evolution of life forms from organic molecules to more complex structures.
